The Galway Hookers are a symbol of galway. The name comes from their use of hook and line fishing. They are traditional fishing boats consisting of a single mast with one mainsail and 2 foresails.. The boats are characterized by a black boat with red-brown sails (kings sail had a bit of white also)
They come in 4 classes of boat: An bad mor (35—44ft), Leathbad (32ft), Gleoiteog (24-28ft most common ), Pucan suitable for sailing close to shore
Today the boats are no longer used for fishing but Galwegians are still very proud of our culture and the boats are still made and used for racing
Festivals include: CrinniunaMbad (Gathering of the boats) and the blessing of the bay, and an tostal . Communities from different parts of Galways coastline have numerous regattas each year where they race this beautiful vessels.
